First Friday Art Walk-December

It was a little chilly, but it was a pleasure to hit the streets of downtown Phoenix! Thankfully, we had three female volunteers distributing literature and engaging in conversations. Also, we were able to work alongside an old street-evangelist buddy, Tom Fusco. I didn't just talk about abortion, but had the opportunity to discuss chemical evolution and the origin of life with a couple of evolutionists, as well as present the gospel to a young homosexual. The first word of the Great Commission is "Go". There are so many people out there hurting for the truth that need us to go out and show them that we care enough. Please consider making your New Year's resolution to come and help out this January or February. We would love to work alongside you!!! August 25, 2011: The Center For Bio-Ethical Reform (CBR) and it’s project partner, Life Decisions International (LDI), announce an abortion-related boycott and picket of the St. Regis Monarch Beach Hotel, located at the intersection of One Monarch Beach Resort and Niguel Road in Dana Point, CA, 9229, beginning Friday, Saturday and Sunday, August 26-28, 2011, from 2:00PM until 7:00PM each day.

The picketing of this property will continue until Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide, Inc., the corporation responsible for the general management of this hotel, enforces its franchise agreements to bar Starwood licensees from providing philanthropic support to Planned Parenthood, America’s largest abortion provider.

This particular St. Regis property is owned by Washington Real Estate Holdings LLC, whose investors we urge to enforce their management contract with Starwood in terms which forbid Starwood’s corporate sponsorship of Planned Parenthood.

This weekend’s picketing will involve the display of handheld abortion photo signs at the entrances to the St. Regis property. Billboard trucks displaying larger versions of related abortion photo signs will circle the hotel each day. Aircraft will tow 50’X100’ aerial billboards displaying still larger abortion photos in tight orbits directly above the St. Regis Hotel and golf course.

In the coming months, CBR will begin concentrated picketing of St. Regis special events, such as wedding receptions, using abortion photos which are progressively more graphic. Prior to each of these specially targeted pickets, CBR will issue notice sufficient to permit the St. Regis to provide its clients with adequate opportunities to book alternative arrangements elsewhere.

We believe that Starwood has at least an ethical duty to disclose our picketing intentions to current and prospective customers. Knowingly concealing this information could arguably obligate the St. Regis to refund fees and or expose the hotel to a broad range of civil liabilities.

CBR believes that the targeted hotel is similarly obligated to notify clients with whom it contracts to provide off-site catering, that their events could be picketed by CBR activists who lawfully follow St. Regis catering trucks to their destinations.

We will videotape all of our St. Regis picketing activities and post serialized video vignettes on popular social networking websites. We have also contracted with a private security firm to deploy armed, uniformed officers for all pickets.

In addition to the St. Regis, Starwood hotel trademarks include the Sheraton, Westin, Four Points, Meridian, W and other hotel brands. CBR picketing of additional St. Regis properties and Starwood brands is currently being planned and organized.

Starwood is only the first of 70 corporations, many of which are Fortune 500 companies, whose retail establishments CBR and LDI will picket with abortion photo signs. This group includes such brands as Olive Garden and Red Lobster restaurants, Levi Strauss clothing, Estee Lauder cosmetics, Microsoft computer products, Nike sports gear, Ralph Lauren clothing, Southwest Airline, Staples office products Walt Disney entertainment and Whole Foods Markets. A select sub-group of these 70 businesses will be targeted for intensified picketing between the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays in the Fall and Winter of 2011.

News organizations may request access to a CBR FTP website at which they can download picket-related still photos of publishable quality and picket-related video of broadcast quality. Ten Years of RCC in America

June 2011 – The Center for Bio-Ethical Reform (CBR) marks its ten year anniversary of the Reproductive "Choice" Campaign.

The Reproductive "Choice" Campaign (RCC) is unlike anything ever undertaken in the pro-life movement, and it is one step in CBR's unwavering commitment to exposing the evil of abortion. Each high-resolution sign is designed to juxtapose the reality of abortion (photo) with its abstraction ("choice"). Since abortion advocates love to talk about "choice," it is time for the entire world to see what that "choice" does to preborn children.

The RCC trucks have traveled from coast to coast across the highways of America through 44 states -- including Alaska and Hawaii. In ten years there have been hundreds of news articles and scores of television coverage along the way.

Abortion will continue to be trivialized as "the lesser of two evils" or as "a necessary evil" so long as it is allowed to remain an invisible abstraction. Pictures make it impossible for anyone with a shred of intellectual honesty to maintain the pretense that "it's not a baby" and "abortion is not an act of violence."

Unfortunately, virtually every TV station, newspaper, and magazine in America blanketly refuses to show this country what abortion actually does. As such, CBR has poured great energy into finding ways around these media gatekeepers. The American roadway has become our chief venue, and though we are not popular, we are effective. CBR is not out to win a PR battle, but we are out to change the way people perceive abortion. We want America to be very bothered by this massive and deliberately hidden injustice, even if we are hated in the process.

There has been a lot in the news lately concerning the defunding of Planned Parenthood. While we should do everything in our power to stop the federal funding of abortion, Planned Parenthood has a large donor base that will keep it afloat no matter what. Actually, because of the budget fight, PP's donations have risen 500%. What does this mean? Well, it means that we must continue fighting to make abortion unthinkable through the use of graphic images. In other words, abortion is well-funded, privately and federally, because very few people have been made to see what abortion actually is. Planned Parenthood will be defunded when we make abortion unthinkable!

“Would you look at that?” he said, as we stood on the U of Louisville campus. Pastor Dave Daubenmire and I watched as professional pro-aborts desperately denied the truth staring them in the face. The students weren’t buying it.

“Every time Christians show up with the truth, we win.” But then Pastor Dave hit me where it hurts, “The only problem is, we Christians usually don’t show up.”

Jesus said the gates of Hell would not prevail against the Church (Matthew 16:18), but can we really apply that verse when the Church does nothing?

The biggest example of this is abortion. We have abortion in American because the “pro-life” church isn’t showing up. I’m not talking about the churches that are officially pro-abortion. I’m talking about just the churches you and I attend.

If you are reading this, you probably attend a church that claims to be “pro-life.” But is it really? An easy test to perform:

Go to the nearest abortion clinic when the killing is going on. Count the number of your pastors/elders/church leaders that show up.
Go to the next meeting of any pro-life endeavor in your community and count the number of your pastors/elders/church leaders that show up.
Take a look at the budget of your church and add up the money spent on stopping abortion. Then add up the money spent on church-run sports programs. Then add up the money spent on making the music better on Sunday morning. If you add it up all over Knoxville, where I live, it will be a few thousand dollars to stop abortion, hundreds of thousands to run sports programming, and millions of dollars on the Sunday morning music. I’m not knocking music or sports, but I am wondering why full-time professionals are hired to run sports and music programs in almost every major church, but almost zero staff time is ever devoted to help stop killing babies. That despite the fact that approximately 1 in 5 women who aborts her baby identifies herself as a “born-again” or “evangelical” Christian.
Take a look at the required core education curriculum of your church. It has to be on paper (or online) or it doesn’t count. Look for the mandated requirements for teaching middle and high-school students about abortion. Are there any such requirements? No? Then is it any wonder why so many of our children have abortions?
As you evaluate the pro-life education requirements at your church, find out if photos/videos of aborted babies are mandated as part of the published curriculum. We hear from the students who grew up in “pro-life” churches all the time. Just recently, two student government leaders at Liberty University told me they were not commited pro-lifers until I showed them pictures of abortion. The “pro-life” church had hidden the truth from them, and they had never known nor cared because they had never seen.

So, is your church “pro-life”? What are you going to do about it?

P.S. A pastor recently told me that his church ”works through” the local CPC that some of their members helped to start 20 years ago. Not sure what that means, but I do know it ain’t much. They were not interested in doing anything more. I can tell you that babies are dying in that church, but the pastor believes that their only responsibility to those babies is to send a few dollars to a pregnancy center across town. If I ever have a heart attack, I hope I’m not sitting in that church!

I'll never forget last year a concerned mother called me to lecture me on how her teenage son had never seen a pregnant girl at his school in four years. I let the silence build up before I told her the obvious truth that the school was not filled with chaste students, but instead the students were getting abortions.

Every First Friday, Roosevelt St. teems with over 10,000 people parading past street vendors, entertainers and evangelists. Because there are so many teens walking around this highly-dense area, it is a prime location for our pro-life literature and signs. This summer we want to bring our large, 6ft. x 13ft. signs to the parade so that we can take advantage of all of these eyeballs. Nowhere in Phoenix is there a better location for reaching youth with the message of life. This is ground zero.

A poor reflection on really how many people are actually walking up and down Roosevelt. The amount of teens in the crowd makes coming here a must for CBR Southwest.

Editorializing in an opinions column, oh my!

The piece in the Wildcat about the Center for Bioethical Reform display (“Warning: Propganda (sic) ahead,” March 24) shows very clearly that you are not obeying the principles of journalism as they apply to actual reporting, and not editorializing. And we are accustomed to that. Now, here are some questions about the piece.

You say “Displays like this … distort the complex nature of the issue of abortion, even from the pro-life perspective.” Please, exactly how does this display specifically distort the nature of abortion? And what do you mean by “even from the pro-life perspective”? You further say, “The comparison lacks validity…” referring to the comparison of the 52,000,000 abortions in the U.S. since Roe v. Wade in 1973 to other genocides. But you make no effort to tell readers about the motive for your opinion. And what is it about this free speech that makes it not “true speech”? Further along, you refer to the display as “distorted propaganda.” Missing is exactly what about the display made you think it was distorted. Why is that missing? Missing also is your explanation of why “their ends-justify-the-means approach is unacceptable.” Why is what you consider “their ends-justify-the-means” not acceptable? Finally, apparently your last paragraph is intended to somehow indicate that most University of Arizona students are pro-abortion, and while that may be true, it is not true generally. Studies show that most people are increasingly opposed to abortion at will, and among those, young people particularly are becoming more and more anti-abortion.

High School students hardly ever see what abortion looks like, even as they have pro-choice agendas shoved down their throats when Planned Parenthood is allowed to present on their campus. Our presence on the street and sidewalks help end the monopolization of "Choice". As an aside, this is the age group that is the most sexually active. If there is not a pregnant girl on campus, it doesn't mean everyone is staying chaste.

Tons of students take the bus to Camelback. Almost every student we met took one of our DVDs.

"I don't want to see that"

During our "Truth Truck" tour of ASU Sep. 21-25, we received some voicemail messages from the number posted on the side of our 22ft. billboard truck. Here is one. Please listen. He is very calm.

"I don't want to see that."

As Anthony makes perfectly clear, the images are graphic and he doesn't think anyone should have to see pictures like these. But in the face of an injustice that is by nature hidden from the public, what else are we to do? I think he assumes that the mass media outlets will do their job. After all, Martin Luther King Jr. didn't have to take the images of racial injustice onto the sides of billboard trucks. But this was because newspapers and television stations were more than happy to cover the injustice in the South and bring it to the wider public eye so that public sentiment could begin to be altered for good. We are still waiting for journalists and TV reporters to step up and make this a front page, 10 o'clock news story. Until that time, we will keep bringing these images to the marketplace of ideas against the will of the people like Anthony in order to change the will of the people.

On this note, Fr. Frank Pavone from Priests for Life writes, "When a culture is reluctant to learn that abortion is an act of violence which kills a baby, and when so many of those who need to hear the message are complicit in the injustice, people choose to turn away from listening to pro-life talks, attending pro-life events, or reading pro-life brochures. If our educational activity relies primarily on the voluntary consent of the audience we are trying to reach, we will not reach the audience we need to reach."

Planned Parenthood rallied at a park to complain about pro-life legislation sent to Gov. Brewer. We were there to support the legislation and show what choice looks like when all the euphemisms have been erased.

Rally for women's rights? Many of the women on our side kept asking the same question again and again, "What about the rights of those females torn apart in the womb?" African Americans lost their liberty. Native Americans lost their land. The unborn lose their life. There is always someone in power ready to manipulate the weak and the helpless and classify them as non-persons for the sake of cheap labor, cheap land or just plain convenience. In the end, the abortion battle centers on who is and who is not a member of the human community. History shows us that when we start thinking that we have the right to say who gets to join the human club, terrible atrocities happen.

Personal Thoughts on the Death of George Tiller

The real tragedy regarding the murder of Dr. Tiller that no one seems to be talking about is the fact that at the time of his death, Tiller was a member in good standing in his church. That is, though it was widely known to the leadership and members of the church that Tiller was an abortionist, they had embraced him and his practice without the slightest hesitation. In effect, the church was saying loud and clear to the whole world that Jesus Christ condones abortion, the shedding of innocent blood for pay.

On the day of judgment, not only will George Tiller have to give an account for his "Therapeutic Abortions", but the leadership of that church, the shepherds of the flock, will be called to give an account for what they did not do and what they did not say to Dr. Tiller. As well, the entire church community there has slandered the name of Christ in having welcomed Dr. Tiller into their presence.

Operation School Choice @ Horizon High School

The foot traffic was solid for a period of time. We were able to have some youthful volunteers help communicate the message.

Why are we willing to tolerate abortion on demand, but are not willing to tolerate slavery on demand? We have come a long way as a nation, but these pictures show that we still have an enormous blind spot to overcome.

Devout Christians speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves. True religion, as St. James said, does not consist in just holding to pious platitudes, but is a faith lived out. In this day and age, holding people accountable for the words they use needs to be done more, not less.

If abortion is truly as terrible as we say it is, then we should take the necessary action to ensure that it no longer continues. These signs work towards that specific end. They do not bring us respect or a place at the table. They do not endear us to anyone. In fact, they are incendiary by nature and produce community and individual conflict everywhere they are seen. True, they are not nice because abortion is not nice. Pictures of developing fetuses are nice. Pictures of smiling babies are especially nice. And Satan would love for us to keep playing nice so that slogans like "choice" and "reproductive rights" can continue to conquer the hearts and minds of millions of Americans. Satan hates these images. He truly hates them! After 35 years of playing nice, you would think pro-lifers would be sick of playing by someone else's rules of engagement. Stop playing nice!

The UofA and "Election Choice" Campaign

Monday and Tuesday we looped around and around the U of A with these types of images. If you didn't know, almost 50% of all abortions are procured by college-aged students. As Christians, we need to break down the rationalizations that these students have concerning the need for abortion on demand. Join us in this fight!

We spent a lot of time making slow left-hand turns on busy intersections like Euclid and Speedway and Speedway and Campbell! It was our joy to run this mission! Jason had the honor to present to the U of A Students for Life club as well. A one-time gift of $100 will pay for all of our fuel costs down to Tucson and back!

Operation "Election Choice" at the UofA

Starting early Monday and carrying through election day, CBRSW will circle the campus of U of A with 22ft. x 7ft. images of aborted babies. Monday evening, Jason will present to the students for life about hopefully bringing a full-size GAP to Tucson this spring! Pray that young hearts and minds are persuaded to choose the right candidate (pun intended).

This sign is our newest and most incendiary! It challenges the viewer to understand the similarities that each of these great injustices share in common. Please remember, the history of social reform teaches that visual tension must be created if the status quo mindset is to be jarred out of its complacency. If we want abortion to end, we must begin to show why we want it to end!

Bloody Murder?

Have you ever read the sad portion of Judges (ch. 19) where the wife of the Levite was repeatedly gang raped and left for dead by men from the tribe of Benjamin? Do you remember what the Levite did to alert the other tribes about this heinous evil? "When he reached home, he took a knife and cut up his concubine, limb by limb, into twelve parts and sent them into all the areas of Israel. Everyone who saw it said, 'Such a thing has never been seen or done, not since the day the Israelites came up from Egypt. Think about it! Consider it! Tell us what to do!'"

What does any of this have to do with the heinous sin of abortion? Well, some things are so horrible they can't be communicated rhetorically, they must be communicated visually. Some evils are so evil that abstract concepts fail us; what is needed to drive the point home is the concrete reality. As Troy Newman of Operation Rescue notes, "The public outcry against this murder caused the nation of Israel to assemble 'as one man' and end a terrible evil in Israel," (210, Their Blood Cries Out).

Of course, we're not called to dismember corpses and then send the fetal remains to people via the US Mail. Instead, all we need to do is take the photographic evidence of what abortion really looks like and place it on the sides of billboard trucks or bring it to college campuses via CBR's Genocide Awareness Project.

Should the Christian church be screaming bloody murder over the abortion issue? YES! Evangelical author and lecturer, R.C. Sproul notes:

“There has never been a period in Western Christian history where the sanctity of life was so negotiated as it is today. Of the books that I’ve written, over fifty, the one that went out of print the fastest was the book I wrote, The Case Against Abortion. Very, very short shelf life. We did a special video presentation for churches where we gave the case from a Biblical perspective, from a natural perspective and from a legal perspective. And here is what happened…you couldn’t give it away. And we would ask the pastors, why won’t you use this series? And we heard the same answer again and again, and I’m going to tell you what it was. ‘We can’t do that. It will divide our church.’ Because our churches are as divided on this question as the nation is. Every chance I get I say I’ve been studying the things of God for 40+ years and there is an awful lot about God I don’t know. And I don’t have any corner on the market of the knowledge of God. But I can tell you this. If I know anything about God, I’m absolutely positive He hates abortion on demand. If anything violates the clear Biblical principle of the sanctity of life it’s that. And I would think that the Christian church would literally be screaming bloody murder about that issue in our culture...I don’t understand, I just don’t get it. I don’t understand how we can sit back and watch that happen.”

40 Days for Life Kickoff!!!!

4/5 Walsh brothers were seated here outside the 7th Ave. Planned Parenthood to help kickoff the 4o Days 4 Life campaign. The workers inside definitely felt our presence, as did the drivers heading to work. We had great opportunities to talk to young mothers and fathers and witnessed two young Hispanic women go in the clinic and head back out after another sidewalk counselor spoke the truth to them in love (and Spanish)!!!

Go to the 40 Days 4 Life website and sign up for some time to be there! Men need to especially think about filling in for the late hour shifts to ensure safety and an on-going witness! Tempe website!

By the way, we would love to see some of our evangelical brothers and sisters sign up and show up! This is the 5th largest city in the nation and the evangelical community seems to be wholly absent from the sidewalks!!!

Operation "Choice" Field- Labor Day Kickoff

Eleven days and nights at "Choice" Field started very successfully this Labor Day with CBRSW volunteers on the ground with signs and on the road in the "Truth Truck." The crowds were tremendous and surpassed our expectations, while the Phoenix Police Department provided wonderful oversight throughout the day.

PHOENIX, AZ – Starting Labor Day, September 1^st, The Center for Bio-Ethical Reform, Southwest Region (CBRSW) will be driving home its message to Arizonians – literally. In time for the Diamondbacks’ last three home stands of the year, CBRSW will loop around Chase Field an hour and a half before game times with a box truck displaying 22 feet by 7 feet images of aborted human beings.

“In this upcoming election, Phoenicians need to know what ‘choice’ really looks like before they cast their vote for a candidate who is ‘pro-choice,’” said Jason Walsh, Regional Director for CBR Southwest. “One of the essential features of a democratic government assumes that the electorate will be well informed. We intend to inform the electorate about the tragic reality of ‘reproductive rights.’

While some find these images offensive and ineffectual, CBRSW remains undaunted. “The truth has a long history of causing offense, but great social reform movements are always reviled before they are revered.”

At The Library

Where do you go to get reliable information? Where do you go to get the whole story? The library, of course! Last month CBRSW stood outside the main entrance to the largest library in the city of Phoenix, Burton Barr. We used our smaller signs for this occasion, but the impact was still magnified to those who walked in or out of the library that day! The fact of the matter is, in as large a library as this one, you will not find a picture of an aborted fetus. However, you could find stacks and stacks of books about other forms of genocide throughout history. Don't you think the truth needs a witness? "Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves," Proverbs 31:5.

Veto This, Gov. Napolitano!

This month we were able to take the CBRSW "Truth Truck" to the state capitol complex. If anything, Gov. Napolitano knows how to use her pro-choice veto power to crush even the most sensible legislation to help curb abortion on demand. However, she can do nothing to foil our first amendment rights. Help us wag the culture for a change and take our proper headship of this country!! If we do not use our first amendment rights to defend the tiniest of those made in God's image, do you think for a moment that God will grant us the future liberty to speak out against those tyrannies which we find bothersome to our personal peace and affluence?

Small Seeds Sewn in Faith

Though these business cards are not very big and only cost 5 cents each, they can still work to make abortion unthinkable nonetheless! We have found that these cards can be placed/left/hidden/stuffed in an almost endless variety of locations. Recently, we deployed around 500 in a local mall with the help of our intern, Katherine. Though you rarely get to see what change they make, you know that someone at sometime will invariably pick them up.

This card really nails the argument that if we care about the environment, but not the unborn, what's the point!

This card reveals the horror of abortion on one side and then argues on the backside why many of the common pro-choice points are simply not tenable.

If you want to be a pro-life activist, you can start by buying 100 of these cards for $5 and then try to get into the habit of leaving them everywhere you already visit. One of my all time favorites is at the gas pump. I figure that I am already at the pump and I know quite well that someone will come after me, so I stick one in the credit card slot. If you do something as small as this, you could change the way one person views the atrocity of abortion forever! Now, doesn't that make going to the pump feel a little better?

America's Favorite Pastime?

CBRSW canvassed Chase Field the 1st, 2nd and 3rd of July and will finish our run on the 5th and the 6th. With 40,000 people hanging around and tons of traffic, it makes perfect sense that we would be showing Phoenicians what they are tolerating everyday in their own community. Suffice it to say, people really care about where the D-backs are in the NL West, but they seem to have no passion for the tiniest of their neighbors. We are out to change that!!!!

The parable of the canoe

All three canoeists were in the same canoe, but all three saw different realities. The first was on a mission to the far island where they could rest, talk and set up camp. Although he was aware of the water coming in the canoe, he wanted to touch dry ground so much that he mostly ignored the rising water and kept rowing and rowing, blithely unconcerned. Now, the second was on a mission to enjoy the great outdoors, wet or dry. And to be honest, he was as content with water in the canoe as he was with the water on the outside of the canoe. The third was on a mission to the far island like the first canoeist, but since the canoe had started to take in water, he was concerned with all the dry goods and knew that they weren't designed to float, the canoe was. His mission changed as the circumstances changed. He knew that the most vital mission at that moment was to stop the canoe from taking on water, lest all their dry goods be gone forever and their trip utterly ruined.

Pro-Life Church Model

Hypothetically, let's imagine that a church wanted to do something to help end the abortion tragedy. Remember, this is a tragedy that has ended the lives of more than 40 million babies. Let's keep that in mind throughout. Now, what could this church do? The image below demonstrates the 3-fold mission of the body of Christ in relationship to abortion.

Priestly/pastoral care is usually undertaken by the great work of Crisis Pregnancy Centers. For those women seeking help through a crisis pregnancy, these clinics are literally a Godsend! However, what about the vast majority of pregnant women who want help ending their crisis pregnancy? What about the vast majority of America (church included) that is asleep on this issue? Therefore, is supporting a CPC sufficient? No. It is necessary to help end abortion, but not sufficient.

Kingly ministry equips the members of the church to be light-bearers in this culture of death by teaching and equipping them to defend the pro-life cause in a robust and muscular fashion. This means pro-life apologetic seminars, presentations and conferences that allow the members of the church to scientifically and philosophically defend life, comprehend emerging bio-ethical issues and vote in a uncompromisingly pro-life direction! This ministry is also very concerned with the ability of young Christians to know what they believe about pro-life issues and why they believe it! The next generation must be made to lead, not follow. Is this ministry sufficient? No. While absolutely necessary, it is hardly sufficient to help end abortion!

Prophetic ministry is nearly completely absent from the body of Christ in relation to abortion! First, what is it? This ministry unflinchingly shows to the culture and the church what abortion really looks like and why justice must be served. It is designed to outrage the body of Christ towards action and condemns cowardice and complacency in the face of nothing less than legal child sacrifice. Second, why is this ministry so avoided by the church? Well, the church cannot offend a culture and be seeker sensitive at the same time. The church cannot serve two masters. Since 1973, the church has largely avoided the one unassailable law of effective social reform: show the people what they are tolerating so that they no longer tolerate it anymore. Effective social reformers have never been popular at the moment they were flipping over the apple cart of the status quo. Again, the church flinches in the face of abortion and wonders why, after 40 million dead babies, the killing continues. Of course, this ministry is not sufficient by itself to help end abortion. But it is necessary. Any church that says that it is not necessary is badly mistaken.
